Kari’s Story
Kari enrolled in Healthier Moms and Babies as a first-time mom seeking guidance and support during her pregnancy. Navigating financial stress, transportation barriers, and anxiety, she was determined to create a healthy, stable environment for her baby. Through consistent support from her nurse home visitor, Tara, Kari received education on a range of topics, with a strong emphasis on safe sleep practices.
From the beginning, Kari embraced learning how to create a safe sleep environment for her daughter, Iris. She gained a clear understanding of how to place her baby on her back, use a firm sleep surface, and keep the sleeping area free of blankets and toys. This education quickly became part of her daily routine, helping her feel more confident as a new mom. Over time, Kari not only followed safe sleep guidelines consistently but became a passionate advocate, even using her artistic talents to create a community display promoting safe sleep awareness during the 2025 Chalk Walk.
After Iris was born and spent time in the NICU, Kari leaned on the knowledge and reassurance she had built during pregnancy. As she adjusted to motherhood and worked through postpartum depression, maintaining safe sleep practices provided structure and peace of mind. With ongoing encouragement, Kari grew more confident in both her parenting and personal identity.
Today, Iris is a healthy, thriving toddler, and Kari continues to model safe sleep and share her knowledge with others. Her journey reflects how education, combined with compassionate support, empowers families to build safe, healthy foundations for their children.
