Angela’s Story

Angela enrolled in Healthier Moms and Babies (HMB) Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) after being referred during her pregnancy through Women’s Care Center. As a first-time mom, she was navigating a season filled with change, questions, and the normal mix of excitement and uncertainty that comes with preparing to welcome a baby. From the very beginning, Angela connected with her nurse home visitor, Michelle, who began working with her to build a strong foundation for a healthy pregnancy and birth.

During pregnancy, Michelle supported Angela in attending her prenatal appointments, regularly checked her blood pressure, and provided ongoing education about nutrition, warning signs, and what to expect during labor and delivery. Together, they talked through Angela’s hopes and concerns about becoming a mother, and Michelle helped her prepare for newborn care, breastfeeding, safe sleep, and postpartum recovery. This early, consistent support helped Angela feel informed, empowered, and more confident as she approached delivery.

Angela gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 40 weeks, weighing 6 pounds, 11 ounces. With no delivery complications, she was able to focus on healing and bonding with her daughter while adjusting to the day-to-day routine of caring for a newborn.

Through ongoing nurse home visiting services, Angela continues to receive individualized education and encouragement tailored to her needs as a new mom. One of the most meaningful aspects of the program for her has been the trusting relationship she built with Michelle. Angela shares that Michelle’s kindness and consistency helped her feel cared for, not just as a client, but as a person. When Angela began experiencing postpartum anxiety, her nurse provided reassurance, practical coping strategies, and connections to mental health resources through Healthier Moms and Babies.

Safe sleep has remained an important focus during home visits. Angela received a Pack ‘n Play to ensure her daughter has a safe place to sleep and continues to follow recommended safe sleep practices. This support has increased her confidence and given her peace of mind as a new parent.

Living on a single income, access to HMB diaper distribution program has helped relieve financial stress, allowing Angela to focus more on meeting their baby’s needs and less on difficult budget choices.

Having a support system at home as well, Angela has been able to start investing in her future, having recently started college courses in psychology and communications. Balancing school and motherhood is challenging, but she remains motivated and hopeful as she works toward long-term goals for herself and her daughter.

Participation in HMB services contributed to positive outcomes for Angela, including a healthy baby, strengthened support systems, and access to essential resources.  As a result, Angela is building a solid foundation for her child’s future, one step at a time.
