Introducing our Doula Program

We are excited to launch our doula program to better serve our families! Extensive research shows us doulas are a mitigating factor for maternal mortality and many other risks to birthing families, particularly in low-income communities and communities of color. Healthier Moms and Babies doula program uses the Community Based Doula approach. Community-based doulas provide culturally sensitive pregnancy and childbirth education, early linkage to health care, and other services like labor coaching,

After a traumatic birth of her own, Taylor, Healthier Moms and Babies’ Doula Coordinator, became a certified doula to be able to offer other women a better experience. Our doula program is another way we can deliver bold compassion to our community. To Taylor, Bold Compassion means "approaching every situation with empathy and fearlessness with the goal of giving the absolute best care for our families.”

Most think of Doula’s being used for home births, but it is becoming increasingly common for Doula’s to be in the hospital labor delivery as an additional layer of support for the mothers and their medical team. Doulas are trained professional who provides relational, non-judgmental support and educations to birthing people and their families during late pregnancy, birth and early postpartum to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. Hiring a doula can help improve the birthing experience decrease the use of Pitocin, decrease labor by 40 minutes, decrease the risk of a NICU visit, decrease the risk of a c-section, and decrease the use of pain medication. By providing additional support and advocacy, our staff will uplift our families every step of the way. Healthier Moms and Babies’ doulas will only be used as birthing support and will not be delivering babies.

In late January, our five new community-based doulas completed their initial training with DONA International; they will be working on completing their certification over the next few months. Our doula service will be free of charge to our families. One of these doulas, Rebecca, shares why she is excited to begin her journey as a doula, “The reason I desired to become a birthing doula is in the thought of knowing that through this one act of service, there's potential to profoundly impact not only the community I love, but the unborn generations to come!"
