May Mom of the Month

As a young, first-time mom, Shamari enrolled in our Nurse Family Partnership Home Visitation program. Scared and still in high school, Shamari sought support and guidance of Healthier Moms and Babies to help her be the best mom that she could be. While she had emotional support of her mother, Shamari looked to Healthier Moms and Babies for prenatal education.

Her nurse home visitor, Julie, educated and empowered her throughout her pregnancy. Julie encouraged Shamari to meet her personal goals and continue in her education; she provided Shamari with additional support with time management, helping Shamari plan for life after baby’s birth. Julie brought resources about safe sleep, labor and delivery, and more. As Shamari learned more about how baby was developing and how her baby was growing, she felt more confident in her abilities as a mom.

Shamari worked hard to balance school, work, and motherhood—and it paid off. Maleiya was born on April 15, 2018. She was born happy and healthy at 39 weeks, just a few weeks before the end of Shamari’s junior year. Since her birth, Julie has continued to meet with Shamari. Each visit, they discuss developmental milestones, fun activities to do with Maleiya, and how Shamari can continue to achieve her academic goals.

Since finding out she was pregnant, Shamari has maintained her honor roll and 3.7 GPA. She is set to enroll at Ivy Tech in the fall to pursue a degree in nursing. Shamari has worked hard to achieve her academic and personal goals—and be a great mom to Maleiya. She offers encouraging words to other young moms like her: “stay positive; stay motivated; even if you don’t have a good support system, be your own support system.”
