October Mom of the Month
“Get ready for the ride of your life”
Kari is a first-time mom in Healthier Moms and Babies’ prenatal home visitation program. At 33 weeks along, she has been in our program for the last seventeen weeks with her case manager, Chelsea. She is excited and nervous, a familiar feeling for many mothers.
For Kari, one of the best feelings in her pregnancy were baby’s first movements. As her baby girl grows and moves, mom is busy preparing. Kari loves looking at the tiny baby items, the small onesies and socks, as she gathers her nursery. With her family far away, Kari does feel the stress of trying to make everything work. With pregnancy, there are often things that you can’t plan for—when exactly will baby come? Will my family have enough time to get to the hospital? The things that she can plan for, Kari has been doing great. She’s adjusting her diet to better suit baby and drinking lots of water. She’s attending additional birthing classes at Women’s Care Center.
While pregnancy can induce the stress of not being able to plan for everything, it can also bring about a new sense of responsibility. Kari has been thinking lately in a new way—she’s thinking about wills, insurances, and what would happen to baby if something happened to her; things that she explains she didn’t ever think about before her pregnancy. Now she’s responsible for this little life.
With Healthier Moms and Babies, Kari has found joy and encouragement; Chelsea’s monthly meetings have brought the resources and tools she needed feel ready to have her baby. Kari is thankful for the support system that she has, Healthier Moms and Babies included.
For expecting mothers, Kari offers this advice: there will be good days and there will be bad days. Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
